Shed Tours - Prebooked Only
During the Summer Gala, there is a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes at the railways' locomotive and carriage & wagon shed.
Aviemore Locomotive Shed was opened in 1898 at the time Aviemore became a junction and is unique in that it is still being used for its original purpose of servicing, maintaining and rebuilding motive power.
When the Strathspey came into being in 1972, the Shed was being used by a private motor repairer with all trackwork up to and inside the Shed having been lifted and removed.
By December 1975, the Shed had been reconnected to the main line and track re-laid inside, so it now appears as it was in Victorian times.
Todays' visitor will see steam locomotives in various stages of repair and restoration and, if lucky, witness heritage skills such as manual machine tool operation.
Early 2000 additions to the engineering capabilities was the provision of a Carriage and Waggon repair shed with 40 tonne lifting jacks and metal fabrication and wood trades facilities.
Shed tours will include a visit to a typical 1950s branch line signalbox.
