Summer Heritage Diesel Specials
A rare opportunity to experience classic Highland line Heritage Diesel traction in the heart of the Highlands this summer.
The railway is using each of its large Heritage Diesels during the first three weekends in July.
July 5th, and 6th. Class 27
July 12th, and 13th. Class 37
July 19th, and 20th. Class 31
Class 27 and 37 replaced steam from the mid 1960's and continued in use on Highland rails until the mid 1990's when they were replaced by more efficient DMUs.
These historic Diesel locomotives will complement our Steam services on these weekends giving a total of five services daily along the restored Highland Line between Aviemore and Broomhill.
Heritage Diesel locomotives play a vital role in the railways' operations—whether shunting, hauling P-Way trains, or assisting in the stabling of The Royal Scotsman train. Class 27, 31, and 37 locomotives will take turns, on separate weekends, hauling these special services, ensuring variety and reliability for enthusiasts and passengers alike. A trolley service will operate on the Heritage Diesel trains.
The Class 37 has recently returned to service following a light restoration, proudly sporting a fresh repaint that highlights its classic design.
Join us for a nostalgic journey and savour the sights, sounds and smell, of a bygone era.
Be sure to check our timetable for service times. Heritage Diesel Trains depart Platform 3, Aviemore station at 11.20 and 13.50.
Dogs are permitted on these trips.
Children under 5 are free of charge but please ensure you still add the ticket for them to ensure we allocate enough seats for you.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions, prior to purchase
Travel tickets can also be purchased at our other stations on the day of travel subject to availability.
Please note that while we strive to operate the scheduled Heritage Diesel locomotive, unforeseen technical issues may require a substitution in exceptional circumstances.
